What can I expect?
Expect a sense of calm and relaxation on the table. In many cases, an improvement in pain can be felt immediately, or after a few sessions.
Is it painful?
No. The needles used are extremely thin, about the width of a fine hair and does not go into a nerve, or blood vessel. Needle sensations are imperceptible after a second. Patients often doze or tune out while on the table. Acupuncture would not be so popular if it is painful.
Are the needles safe?
Absolutely. They are presterilized, disposable needles used only on you.
Is there insurance coverage?
Please check with your carrier about coverage. I am an out of network provider. I will give you a bill with a procedure and diagnosis code for you to submit. Many patients can download the insurance form. Most Blue Cross Blue Shield plans cover acupuncture. Medicare does not.
How frequently do I have to come?
The first visit is 1 1/2 hour and subsequent visits are an hour long. It takes about 6 weekly visits to see whether treatment is going in the direction that we want. Once you feel better, we stretch out treatment time to every 2 weeks, then once a month. At this point I consider the patient well enough to be on their own.
